Meet Tommy Shannon - our champion Molar Roller Fundraiser who has raised a huge 1500 with a week still to go!!So what is Tommy's secret...how has he managed to extract money from not one but two Deans of the DDUH, from not one but two chief executives of the DDUH.....from any oral surgeon who walks throughout he door? Well Tommy has worked as porter at the DDUH for the last 16 years and when anyone who looks like they might be able to spare a euro or two walks through the main entrance nowadays - our Robin Hood asks caringly if there is something wrong with their arm? And if they answer 'no everything's fine then he asks then to use that good arm and sign his sponsor sheet' ;)))))
Tommy is no stranger to raising money for charity and in the past has run marathons and raised thousands, however he had never owned a bike until the molar rollers caught his interest. Starting from scratch as a cyclist, Tommy has trained relentlessly and now cycles to Blackrock and back in his lunch break........every day except Tuesday - when he plays in goal for the student/staff 5 a side football games. Is he any good I asked Pat...his 'friend and co-worker' well we call him Cinderella said Pat.....cos he is always late for the ball......so maybe cycling is more your thing Tommy?
Tommy lives in central Dublin, has ten children (5 girl and 5 boys) and they say they have never seen their Da like this and all agree that cycling has taken over his life nowadays. Tommy has shed two stone, is cycling 200km minimum a week, and is looking forward to the craic, the challenge...and getting away from Pat for a week!!!!
Tommy wants to thanks everyone for their help and support and is crediting his achievement to his ten grandchildren, Sophie, Caitlin, Hayley,Louise, Liam, Leon, Alannah, Casey, Brooke and Luke.
We are sure that they are all very proud of you Tommy....we Molar Rollers sure are.....keep going with your fundraising .....it's amazing how you do it
a comment has come in from an anonymous onlooker at St Mary's Rugby Club, who tells us that Tommy's training tip regime consists of a bottle of white wine to recover and rehydrate following a long cycle
