Welcome to the first BLOG of the Molar Rollers. We are a group of 37 people setting up from Dublin University Dental Hospital on the
19th of August planning to arrive in London 9 days and 600km later. Why this the crazy idea - surely August is a time to be relaxing, rejuvenating and sunning yourself somewhere beautiful you may be asking yourself. Well let's say that a certain John Hammond, head porter at Dublin University Dental hospital was the man to blame.....so when asked about how he hatched this plot to take us all to London - this was his unashamed reply....

‘Sometime around September/October 2009 the number of bikes
in the bike-stand at the DDUH suggested to me an enthusiasm (albeit a compulsory commuting enthusiasm) for cycling.
When staff and student cyclists responded positively to a few ideas, an informal cycle touring group was formed. Following this I then enlisted the expertise and advice of Neill Delahaye from Sportsmed Ireland on Kildare Street.... Neill is one of Ireland's leading amateur cyclists, currentlyranked 6th in the country. On October 03, 2009 the "Molar Rollers" came into being and Neill led us out for a leisurely 20km around the roads of the Phoenix Park.Thereafter, monthly loop spins were organised in other parts of the city and have continued ever since.
Last year I was part of the Dublin Dental Hospital Mouth Cancer Awarenessday and I wondered how we could as a group help launch some fundraising initiative.....and the rest as we might say is history...."

Over the next few days we will introduce you to the members of the group who are hoping to cycle 700km over 9 days and in doing so raise awareness of mouth cancer and raise 40K in aid supporting those people who have mouth cancer or who have suffered from the devastating and life-lasting effects of the curative treatment they required afterwards.

Next Tuesday at approximately 9.10am you can see John himself with Professor Brian O'Connell, himself another keen molar roller and Gerry Collins who is a mouth cancer survivor who will be interviewed live on the Ireland am couches and learn more about this mad crazy but definitely worthy 'summer trip'
